Personal vs professional purposes & uses

Personal vs professional
On a personal level social media is used by individuals to document aspects of their day-to-day lives so sharing videos on their holiday that no one else wants to see, chronicling in unnecessary deal what they've done at the gym quotation from the Dalai Lama about wellbeing accompanied accompanied by stock photographs of sunsets, their insane thoughts on political issues of the day... the list goes on. essentially its. breeding ground for vanity.

There is a degree to which there is cross over between personal and professional-in which people use their social media account to further their own business interests. This might be an existing celebrity though increasingly, the lines are becoming blurred-with celebrity bloggers, vloggers and you tubers.

The hierarchy of needs

Abraham Maslow Hierachy of needs (1943) pyramid is a useful model, which addresses human needs that exists beyond basic survival

Its not specific to media and has been used and developed across a range of different subjects and ideas. its principles can be usefully applied to social media

Love and belonging
This is a major one for social media – building groups dedicated to people or things. These can often be very niche.
This is so people can find other people and form groups of similar interests an feel that they are belonging in a digital world rather than the real world for example the well and Kaboodle and meet up.com
Self-actualisation and Esteem
Social media lowers your self esteem however at the same time could raise it by having likes on pictures of yourself and you feel like you need a lot of likes in order to gain self actualisation and if you don't get a certain amount of likes or if you don't look a certain way you can feel bad about yourself.

This episode portrayed the use of social media and how it takes over your life and you obsess over what people think of  you and how you make superficial relationships towards other people out of jealousy.

Professional

LinkedIn
A business-oriented service that allows users to share online CV profiles in order to communicate with other business professionals and gain employment.
Formed in 2002, it’s one of the earliest networking sites that offered users the ability to communicate for employment and career progression.
It’s regularly used as a means of crowdsourcing personnel for projects, and dedicated websites such as www.crowdsourcing.org work as a collective hub for projects that require skills and experience.

Social TV
Many media institutions – especially television – encourage audiences to use social media. Watching television is increasingly becoming integrated with social networking via smart TV and black box devices.
For example, The X Factor is fully integrated with live Twitter feeds throughout the show. This encourages participation, and can also be used by media producers to measure the impact of participation.
